Stoney Nakoda

Struggling with the death of his father who died in 2015 and the death of his mother, who passed away in 2016, the family said that Cavin Poucette might have been in a dark place in the months leading up to his fatal shooting in October 2017, but they do not believe he wanted to end his life

The Stoney Nakoda band has been trying to convey its position that the provincial historic site designation should only be renewed if the historic significance of the site is recognized from the viewpoint of the Stoney Nakoda people and not just from the viewpoint of settler society, the Christian church and the McDougall Stoney Mission Society – with letters of concern sent as early as March 2019.

“One thing we need to take control of is addiction, before it takes control over us. We need to do something together. You as a people must change yourselves first if you want change to happen.”
