The public will have its chance to weigh in on Canmore council potentially moving forward with policy to discourage employee housing in Canmore’s light industrial areas.

“We need to diversify all of our approaches in terms of trying to bring on more attainable non-market affordable – whatever you want to call it – housing to be able to house our workforce and our citizens. … I think this is a good investment of exploration,”

A new residential project will see a developer pay off-site levies on a phased basis as the policy that guides such payments will return to council in the future for a much needed update.

Though Alberta doesn’t allow vacancy taxes similar to Vancouver or Toronto, the Municipal Government Act enables tax subclasses to be created and each taxed at different rates.

A Bow Valley advocacy group for builders and developers will take part in the upcoming legal battle on off-site levies between the Town of Canmore and developers after a ruling by a provincial tribunal.
