A 10-unit visitor accommodation on 10th Street will move forward after Canmore’s Subdivision and Appeal Board upheld its approval by the Town’s development authority.

The biggest concern was the structure type, with the original tower being a lattice design with antennas mounted in a flower formation. Based on the public feedback, a monopole structure was then proposed.

“I do think it is important that it is looked at. We can’t allow more development if we don’t have water and wastewater availability for future growth. It is kind of putting the cart before the horse. We need to make sure we got that ability before we can add that growth into an MDP.”

“We really felt that under the previous qualification criteria we weren’t necessarily capturing all the people who could be part of the program. Times are tough and we really want to make sure we’re helping residents stay in the community.”

The Town’s Development Appeal Board (DAB) upheld the order in a Dec. 6 hearing, but agreed to delay enforcement allowing the homeowners of 321 Squirrel Street – Gail Morgan and Janna-Joy Goff – additional time to apply for a development permit and bring the home up to compliance.

“Canmore was obligated to undertake the remedial steps of purchasing or redesignating the land within six months of the effective date of the [2020 land use] bylaw,”

Banff council has appointed four public members to the community plan steering committee.

“It is overwhelming going through this process and not knowing enough. It might just be me, and I am okay if my fellow councilors could digest it properly. I could use more time and have you go through it more intensely.”

“We’re really hopeful that this document is a reflection of the conversations we had while door-knocking during the election and the conversations we’ve had during our first year as council.”

“My concern is around maximizing franchise fees in relation to affordability, but I also believe we should maximize franchise fees because they’re a revenue source that everyone pays, directly connected to the usage of non-renewable resources and we have a clear allocation of how we use that. The affordability factor is in my head.”
