Canmore council candidates discuss the elusive resort municipality status and other possibilities in raising income from the increased visitation being experienced in the Bow Valley.

“Part of our framework was informing the visitors and helping them understand how to play in our space the right ways, but also that extends to residents as well. Tension is coming from the idea of overcrowding, congestion, some of those behaviour and structural things, so addressing some of those issues will help get at those things that are frustrating people.”

Potential intervenors were able to make their cases for speaking in the Land and Property Rights Tribunal hearing between Three Sisters Mountain Village Properties Limited and the Town of Canmore.

“I’m definitely in favour of approving this subdivision. It’s going to bring great benefit to the community, so the Gateway district has always been envisioned as a mixed commercial use and with the discussions and proposals in place, it’s clear to me the Gateway will bring a benefit to the community that we need and want.”

“The Banff car was struck while the vehicle fled,” said Cpl. Shane Fletcher, adding no RCMP officers were injured and the police vehicle had minor damage to the front-end.

“I think there’s still this preconceived assumption that fish and wildlife have come and they’ve taken the bear to some kind of bear utopia where there’s lots of food and no people and everything’s happy, but the reality is bear utopia doesn’t exist.”

Development is a polarizing issue in all communities, but the Three Sisters Mountain Village area structure plans highlighted its priority in the community as election candidates weigh in on the path forward for affordable development.

“Bears coming into residential areas to feed on unnatural food sources is a public safety risk because they are easily habituated and may defend the food source."

“If the proponent had brought forward a development similar in nature to those we have across from us Mallard Alley resident would likely have no objection. It’s the magnitude of this visitor accommodation we are having so many problems with.”
