Canmore's subdivision authority approved an application by Stone Creek Properties for block 10 – a residential neighbourhood – even though development of commercial lands for the resort centre have not yet commenced.

"Supporting first reading at this time for me is entirely motivated by wanting to, as other councillors have said, do one last check-in with the community to make sure that we understand what are the preferences, particularly of the Teepee Town community," said Mayor John Borrowman.

“We are trying to encourage housing supply, and yet if I’m to do a development, it’s cheaper for me to pay the Town this roughy $35,000 per bedroom than to go ahead and build the commensurate amount of housing," said Coun. Peter Poole

“We’re still seeing investment; we’re seeing people using the opportunity to do projects that were possibly a little further out."

"I do want to remind everyone that this area and these little pathways through the centre of our community are really special for people," said Councillor Joanna McCallum, who voted against the motion. "You can walk through these magical areas of Canmore that still exist. It was clear from the letters we received that people really value those areas and find them special."

"I believe it comes down to an issue of fairness," said Van Horne resident Russell Stanley during a recent public hearing. "The existing five homes were built with a 60-metre setback enforced by the Town. "Our understanding was that this was an environmental setback that would not change. We designed and built our home based on that." 

"Since the passing of this bylaw, council and administration have received immediate and significant feedback with respect to the tourist home zoning limitations," said Councillor Rob Seeley. "With a new more informed understanding of limiting the number to one tourist home unit, I advocate for further consideration."
