“It’s clear not just based on my opinion, but all the opinions of everybody who spoke at (the May 18) SDAB (hearing) that employee housing is important. As some of the speakers said, no one thing is going to solve the whole problem, but every little bit counts and this was one every little bit. It’s so hard for anyone to find housing.

Canmore council will decide on the future of employee housing in industrial areas in the community, as development applications have come forward putting businesses and Town staff in conflict over housing.

An appeal against the Town of Canmore’s planning department to deny employee housing in the light industrial area of Bow Meadows Crescent was denied by the Town’s Subdivision and Development Appeal Board.

“It is upsetting to walk away from this idea we’ve been dreaming of for so long and have invested time, money, and energy into, but at this point, it would be irresponsible to move forward with this specific project on Cave Avenue.”

The continued battle on the future of employee housing in Canmore’s light industrial area entered its third round.

A series of capital projects – including the polarizing Bow River west pathway project – will have their budgets increased, while a pair of projects will be put off for another budget to help cover costs.

“It’s considered a draft document and can be further amended and will likely be further amended before it’s presented to council.”

“Parking kills housing – this is a truth in the Town of Banff,” said Darren Enns, director of planning and development for the Town of Banff.

A pair of development proposals will head to a public hearing in what could be precedent-setting for future planning applications.

“We’re seeing that impact not only the community and its ability to retain community members and build a place that people want to call home for the future, but it’s also beginning to impact the labor force and our ability to retain and attract workers, whether that be in tourism and hospitality or nursing or teachers.”
