Police are investigating a hit-and-run death in the Canmore area on Sunday (May 1).

As of 11 a.m. on Monday (April 18), the scene was cleared and traffic is flowing through the intersection.

“It is criminal offence, so it is something we take seriously,” said Sergeant Dean Purcka of Banff RCMP detachment.

The Town of Canmore’s committee of the whole has been updated statistics for the local RCMP detachment, the municipality's bylaw department and photo radar program.

“When we were at incorporation, we came to an agreement with the province that they recognized our uniqueness as a visitor centre and made a commitment to fund some of our policing,” said Silvio Adamo, the director of protective services for the Town of Banff.

“The need has been growing and established, and I know we’re not talking about any incidents, but the concern in the community is high and I think we need to do something to resolve that to be safe this summer and to look after not just after our own community and our visitors, but our policing staff.”
