MD OF BIGHORN – The MD of Bighorn is extending its contract with Calgary 9-1-1.

On Dec. 13, councillors approved a six-month extension in order to give the municipality and Telus time to sign a local government authority agreement (LGAA) as part of the implementation of next generation 9-1-1 services.

“Calgary 9-1-1 is currently using the CRTC and Telus to develop next generation services,” said MD of Bighorn fire chief Andrew Box. “As part of that, Telus will be introducing new local government authority agreements which will govern access and use of the next generation 9-1-1 system.”

The LGAA requires that the MD provide detailed information about 9-1-1 service. Calgary 9-1-1 will assist in gathering that data over the next six months.

Since the agreement is new, Calgary 9-1-1 requires the extension to ensure a full understanding of the LGAA and to confirm its contract with the MD of Bighorn is in complete alignment.

Calgary 9-1-1 is also proposing a two per cent per capita fee increase effective Jan. 1, 2023. This will raise the fee per capita for 2023 to $4.47.

“That is consistent with the terms of the current service agreement,” Box said.

Reeve Lisa Rosvold asked Box about the information related to the calls.

“Through this contract, are they able to provide information about our calls, where they are and how long they take?” she said.

Box said that a monthly summary of all calls that are dispatched through the MD fire department are provided by Calgary 9-1-1.

One Calgary 9-1-1 has a better understanding of the new LGAA, a longer-term contract renewal will be issued between the MD and Calgary 9-1-1.
