Two wolves have been struck and killed on roads in the mountain national parks.

A young-of-year wolf was found dead by the Trans-Canada Highway near Chancellor Peak campground in Yoho National Park at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 23), and an adult wolf was killed about 1.5 kilometres south on Rampart Creek on Highway 93 North in Banff National Park Saturday (Jan. 26).

“Wolves are magnificent creatures and it’s a sad day whenever we lose one and we sincerely regret the loss of these animals,” said Omar McDadi, a Parks Canada spokesman.

“Wolves have huge home ranges and they can travel great distances throughout the year to get the resources they need, and this can potentially expose to risks.”

McDadi said Parks Canada encourages drivers to stick to posted speed limits and remain vigilant on park roads.

“Driving vigilantly can potentially help save or prolong an animal’s life,” he said.

Report all collisions to Banff dispatch at 403-762-1470.
