Flood victims living in temporary housing in Canmore and Exshaw will start paying rent to the provincial government beginning Nov. 15.
The rental payments will vary depending on the number of people in a household and will offset the cost of accommodation, utilities, housekeeping, laundry, Internet and cable television.
“After the floods, our government committed to providing up to 90 days of cost-free accommodation for flood evacuees. As people begin to make longer term plans for re-establishing their lives, it’s fitting that they now begin contributing to the cost of their accommodation,” said Minister of Municipal Affairs Doug Griffiths in a press release.
Residents in interim mobile homes in Canmore and Exshaw will pay average market rents calculated by the province. That works out to $742 for a bachelor suite, $817 for a one bedroom, $922 for a two bedroom and $1,001 for a three bedroom or larger unit. The rent will be collected through Bow Valley Regional Housing.
Homeowners will be able to apply to the Disaster Recovery Program to have rental costs covered.
