Community groups wanted to help celebrate Winter Carnival

Organizers of Canmore’s Winter Carnival in February are hoping local community groups will jump on board for the chance to help celebrate the season – and the two world cups hosted at the Nordic Centre – to Take it Outside.

Take it Outside Party on the Pond is an initiative by event organizers to include community groups in the festivities by providing the venue for them to hold their own Party on the Pond.

World cup excitement specialist Sara Renner said they are looking for groups to host an open celebration using the skating pond on Seventh Avenue near the downtown core.

The Town of Canmore maintains the ice surface and Renner said it will also provide hot chocolate and audio equipment for those groups that step up to host a Party on the Pond each Thursday throughout Winter Carnival, which runs Feb. 1 to March 13.

“We have our most meaningful community celebrations on the pond,” Renner said, noting Christmas and New Year’s are on that list. “It is such a great resource, we wanted to open up that opportunity for local clubs to gather and celebrate what an amazing pond we have.”

A true Canadian tradition, skating on the pond is a simple activity that brings pleasure to all ages and Renner said community groups are welcome to customize the celebration they host as well – ideas like ugly sweater contests or party in your onesie have been given as examples.

But the pond is not the only venue open for groups to hold events as the Civic Centre Plaza is also an option for outdoor activities to be hosted. Events can also double as fundraisers for each group and include the sound system, lights and hot chocolate as well.
