Donations are currently headed to Morley today (June 23) from Canmore, Cochrane and Calgary.

At least two trucks and trailers from Cochrane traveled to the Morley Community School (MCS), which is currently being used as an evacuation centre for the Stoney Nakoda First Nations reserve, with a large number of supplies being packed at the Three Sisters Royal Canadian Legion in Canmore in preparation to be sent to reserve, as well.

Canmore resident Dea Fischer, who stepped in Saturday to help organize collecting food, water and essentials in Canmore for Morley residents, said they are packing boxes of food for the evacuation centre and hampers for residents.

Fischer said the in particular need at this point include sleeping bags, batteries, dried or canned milk (or in a Tetra Pack), canned fruits and vegetables, can openers, potable water and baby food and diapers.

“We are currently packing hampers for families. We’ve got water and a ton of blankets, we’ve really got everything we need other than those few things that we are really short of,” she said.

The donation centre at the Legion is also in need of juice, canned tuna, peanut butter and jam, cereal and pet food.

Baby food and diapers were a particular request from the evacuation centre in Morley, Fischer said.

“We don’t have very much for babies.”

When a call went out to help the people at Morley, Fischer said there has been a significant response from the Canmore community.

“One of the hotel chains brought 80 quilts and blankets specifically for Morley,” she said.

“We have friends out there. I want to know what is happening. I’m just glad we can do something. They need some help out there,” she said.

Heavy rains and flooding have washed out roads on the Stoney Nakoda reserve, stranding residents, according to reports.

With access to the highway open Fischer said she’s had no problem finding vehicles to transport goods to Morley.

“We’ve been inundated with offers of vehicles. It’s unbelievable,” Fischer said.

Fischer said expected the convoy would be in Morley by 2:30 p.m. She added that supplies will continue to be shipped to Morley in the coming days.
