Bighorn takes step forward to declare church historic resource

A public meeting held at Exshaw on Tuesday (June 10) saw no issues raised with an MD of Bighorn proposal to designate the Morleyville Methodist Mission as a municipal historic resource.

Members of the McDougal Stoney Mission Society were present, but have already expressed support for the proposal.

Before council can declare the church and its grounds a municipal historic resource, its members had to first approve a notice stating their intention to move forward with the designation. The public meeting was held to give the public the opportunity to address council and is part of the required public process.

The 1875 church, which is already a provincial historic resource, is the oldest building in the Bow Valley.

Robert Ellis, director of planning services, said a bylaw would come before council on July 8 for first reading and to schedule a public hearing.

Municipal historic designation would also apply to the surrounding land.

This marks the first time the MD of Bighorn has moved to declare a municipal historic resource.
