Banff creates governance and finance committee

The Town of Banff has formally set up a governance and finance committee.

The Town of Banff has formally set up a governance and finance committee.

Council has approved a bylaw that establishes a framework for the new committee, which essentially broadens the scope of the existing finance committee that has been meeting since 2010.

The committee will be made up of mayor and council and will be advisory in nature. Meetings will remain open to the public.

Officials say the governance and finance committee will provide a less formal venue for council to discuss, review and make recommendations on existing policies and bylaws, as well as develop new more complex policies and bylaws.

“It broadens what the mandate was of the finance committee,” said Tara Johnston-Lee, the Town of Banff’s municipal clerk.

“The vision of the governance and finance committee is to create an opportunity for council to have an in-depth discussion of issues and a forum for information sharing prior to council’s formal deliberation in decision-making.”

The committee will discuss financial matters, including operating and capital budgets and long-range financial plans, and will make recommendations on the provision of core municipal services and programs.

In addition, the committee will provide oversight on development and progress on council’s strategic plan.
