LAKE LOUISE – A man was killed after he lost his footing when climbing on Mount Temple on Saturday (July 9).

Emergency services were called before noon, with Lake Louise RCMP, Lake Louise Fire Rescue and Parks Canada responding to the call, according to the police media release.

Police said the man was hiking with other experienced hikers when he lost his footing and slipped on a patch of snow and ice. He was found deceased about 3,300 feet from the site of the fall with Parks Canada’s helicopter responding, police said.

Const. Lauren Mowbray, a media relations officer with the Alberta RCMP, said the identity and age of the man wouldn’t be released per the family’s wishes.

“They were experienced hikers and there was snow and ice there. A chunk had come off and he lost his footing.”

Mount Temple is located in Banff National Park near the British Columbia and Alberta border, south of Lake Louise.

Police didn't identify the man who died.

“They’re understandably distraught,” she said.

“Lake Louise RCMP send their condolences to all involved in this tragedy.”
