A total of 79 post-secondary, high school and adult students, received awards totalling $34,100 from revenue on a capital investment the Nation made in setting up the OTET in February.

If we don’t act now to bolster the ability of our young people to access post-secondary education, we risk negative economic and societal effects that will continue well into the future. While individual students enjoy the private returns of scholarship, society as a whole reaps the public rewards of wise investment in education.

“Everything else in our culture has been reproduced, stolen, borrowed, but the one thing that really still remains that is traditional to us, is our language,” said Duane Mark, language and cultural coordinator at Morley Community School in Mînî Thnî. “That’s why we push it so hard.

“I really try to advocate for Catholic education. It is really important to me that in our community that people remember and know that the Catholic school is a good option for people. It allows our students to develop through our Catholic values and it is important for that option for our community members.”

“Since becoming an educator, I’ve always had this image of little Indigenous kids getting off the school bus, coming into school with love, hope and excitement. I try to make them feel welcome because it is their school and the community has entrusted all of us with serving their students,” said Horvath.
