CANMORE – The Town of Canmore is launching its call centre Monday (March 23) in a bid to connect residents with resources and referrals during the COVID-19 crisis.

The centre can be reached by by phone at 403-678-1551  from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week, or or by email at [email protected].

Mayor John Borrowman made a public announcement online Sunday (March 22), telling residents the municipality is working hard to protect the community and address the changing situations.

“These are very stressful times for all of us here in Canmore, and around the world,” he said.

“We’re keeping in very close contact with the public health authorities, and we’re putting in place the recommendations that they're giving us.”

Alberta reported 226 cases of the new coronavirus, which includes 31 newly confirmed cases on Saturday (March 21). There are now two confirmed cases in the Canmore area, with Banff still reporting none, according to geospatial data from the provincial government's website.

Mayor Barrowman encouraged residents to follow the rules put in place around social-distancing and self-isolation.

“Just as we did in 2013 after the flood, the town came together in a heartbeat,” he said.

“I’m encouraging everybody in the community to help their neighbours and friends as best they can, but rest assured the Town is doing all that we can to keep up with these changing situations to keep our community safe.”

The Canmore emergency coordination centre (ECC) team is meeting daily to implement measures to try to slow spread of the new coronavirus.

The Town of Canmore has not declared a local state of emergency, in the belief that the provincial government declaration on a public health emergency addresses many of the local concerns at this time.
