CANMORE – A 911 call to Canmore RCMP on Monday (Aug. 12) resulted in a semi driver being arrested for having a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.
Canmore RCMP responded to a potential dangerous driver after receiving the 911-phone call at 11:46 a.m. from concerned citizens about a driver swerving all over the Trans-Canada Highway westbound.
When RCMP located and pulled over the semi truck, officers suspected the driver had consumed alcohol and asked for a breath sample into an approved screening device, which he failed.
The driver was arrested and taken to the Canmore detachment, where he provided additional samples of his breath, which showed a blood alcohol concentration that was more than double the legal limit.
Under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, the blood alcohol concentration limit is .05 per cent for motorists. There are several factors that can affect a blood alcohol concentration, according to the provincial website such as sex, weight, medications, fatigue level and rate of consumption.
Upon further investigation, officers discovered the tractor-trailer was loaded.
"His licence was suspended," Cpl. Jon Cormier with the RCMP wrote in a press release.
"RCMP officers continue to be out in every day and night in an attempt to locate and remove impaired drivers from our roads."
Anyone who witnesses or suspects a driver might be impaired on the roads is encouraged to call 911.
