LETTER: Actually, most whistles disappeared with the demise of steam locomotives, unless CPKC Rail was running the empress on a special trip. Nowadays, diesel-electric engines use electric horns. Same purpose, different way of doing it.

I think that Max Wilkie and I may be of similar age, so good on him if he remembers hearing train whistles being used in Banff, according to his March 7 letter in the Outlook "Railway lands proposal on 'wrong side of the tracks'".
