I think that Max Wilkie and I may be of similar age, so good on him if he remembers hearing train whistles being used in Banff, according to his March 7 letter in the Outlook "Railway lands proposal on 'wrong side of the tracks'".
Actually, most whistles disappeared with the demise of steam locomotives, unless CPKC Rail was running the empress on a special trip. Nowadays, diesel-electric engines use electric horns. Same purpose, different way of doing it.
