I was waiting outside of a local takeout eatery with about six other people, to pick up my order. We were wearing masks and following distancing rules as best we can.
All entering and exiting the business were wearing masks. Two individuals, not wearing masks entered the premises, not distancing themselves and placed an order.
I followed this up with a text to the business asking why they didn't refuse service and ask them to return with a mask. This is the response.
"As a small business owner we are not to enforce the bylaw. That is the responsibility of peace officers. We are required to have a sign posted requesting people to wear masks. But I choose not to – that would be discrimination if the person had a medical condition. I’m just abiding by the law that is clearly written."
With health workers and teachers on the front line and other businesses and restaurants doing their part, I find this line of reasoning to be misguided. All their other customers where observing common sense.
Too bad they lost a longtime customer to keep another.
