With 3 1/2 million dogs living in Canada, it is safe to say that many Canadians love pets and that pets are a critical part of our lives.

I myself am a self-proclaimed dog and animal lover – but no, I am not a dog owner.

Over the past few weeks, several opinion pieces have appeared in local newspapers criticizing dog owners in Banff. Some have been, in my opinion, unfairly critical of Banff’s dog owners.

I have lived in Banff for 40 years and from my experience, I can safely say that the average dog owner in this town is responsible and caring. In fact, no responsible dog owner wants their pets to chase wildlife, as it is not just dangerous for the wildlife, but also for the dog.

But anyone who uses their brain a little knows that a dog, just like any other animal, must be exercised in order to lead a healthy life. Since the Town of Banff and the national park do not provide an area to allow owners to exercise their dogs legally (i.e. an off-leash area), the leash law is bound to be broken.

As to the law enforcement, I do appreciate the consideration and tolerance they show towards this affair, as it is not an easy job and you will not please all people all of the time.

Banff dog owners are as responsible as any dog owner in Canada. They love their pets. The lack of off-leash areas makes it difficult for Banff dog owners to adequately exercise their pets.

Those who criticize Banff dog owners have regrettably passed judgement without full considering all the facts.
