I f you’re wondering what on Earth is going on in the Rocky Mountains backcountry – you’re not alone. Parks Canada is certainly wondering if anything can be done about backcountry education and getting the word out about avalanche safety.

One can only imagine the horror involved in the avalanche incident that claimed two lives on Lake Agnes, Saturday (March 8).

Clearly, the issue of housing/staff housing/affordable housing is not one that’s going to go away any time soon in Banff. The issue of affordable housing in the Bow Valley is one that has been on the front burner, off and on, for years and years.

The collective Olympic hangover has likely dissipated after Sunday’s 5 a.m. once-in-a-lifetime alcohol-serviced gold medal men’s hockey game.

Should Marvel Comics decide to put up yet another sequel to Iron Man, or should Hollywood TV moguls decide to film The Six Million Dollar Man Redux, casting agents need look no further for a star than Banff’s own Jan Hudec.

Congratulations to the Alberta Winter Games organizing committee, volunteers, sponsors, coaches, athletes and friends and family of all those who attended our Bow Valley event.

And away we go.

It was good timing indeed for Banff Community High School to officially launch a new 10 kW solar power project, Wednesday (Jan. 29).

With tourism expected to grow as a driving force in Alberta’s economy, it’s time the provincial government recognized towns such as Banff, Canmore and Jasper as being outside the norm as tourism communities.

The fact so many Olympians were in our Bow Valley last week is ample evidence of the importance of the upcoming Alberta Winter Games in Banff and Canmore.
