Train derails west of Banff

BANFF – A CP Rail train has derailed west of Banff on Thursday (Feb. 28), sending 20 rail cars off the tracks.

The Transportation Safety Board has confirmed a train derailment west of Banff on Thursday evening (Feb. 28) at approximately 8 p.m.

BANFF – A CP Rail train has derailed west of Banff on Thursday (Feb. 28), sending 20 rail cars off the tracks.

Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Chris Krepski confirmed the derailment occurred when 10 empty automobile carrier cars and 10 grain cars left the tracks.

Krepski said no injuries were reported and the "site is only accessible by high-rail vehicle."

"The Transportation Safety Board is aware," he said. "We are not deploying, but following up and gathering information."

He said the location of the derailment is mile 87 of the Laggan Subdivision, which is between Banff and Lake Louise.

CP Rail spokesperson Salem Woodrow said the derailment occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. and the cause remains under investigation.
