LETTER: Proposed Canmore spa will impact wildlife

LETTER: Shame on our provincial government for even considering such an irresponsible and unnecessary use of our public land, which is owned by all of us.

Editor:

I was disappointed to learn of Serge Ouimette’s and Frank Kernick’s plans to develop a parcel of undermined public land near Rundleview for a high-end spa in Canmore.

Mr. Kernick’s assertion that this land has no value for wildlife movement is untrue – radio-collared grizzly bears have used this pinch point to squeeze between our busy town and the Rundle Forebay for decades.

Undermining in the area is also real: the nearby Spray Lakes Road slumped two years ago, necessitating repair at provincial taxpayers’ expense. And how long will we build in areas prone to forest fire and have to bail out burned property owners when it could have been avoided?

Shame on our provincial government for even considering such an irresponsible and unnecessary use of our public land, which is owned by all of us.
