As a frequent contributor to the Rocky Mountain Outlook’s Vox Populi, I am always intrigued by comments posted by readers. All writers should enjoy any reaction from their readers.

My most recent offering in the May 30 OutlookFederal Crown prosecutors should intervene in Banff Avenue pedestrian zone”, however, attracted one comment I take issue with: one commentator describes me as a “Karen”.

After laughing out loud, my next thoughts were more critical.

I have several lifelong friends named Karen; a Karen I once dated in Banff remains firmly in my memory as a smart, attractive and thoughtful person. Why would you criticize me by utilizing a meme developed by Black community activists in the United Kingdom to describe racist white women?

Now, there is a Karen in this story that I believe bears some responsibility for the mess that Banff is in; but, I warn you in advance that she is a formidable, intelligent woman who likely won’t appreciate you using her first name as a weaponized slur.

You see, young mysterious commentator Rob Baycroft, sitting Canadian Senator Karen Sorensen was the longtime mayor of Banff. It is her legacy of political choices, as Banff’s former mayor, that have directly led to the frustrations Banffites are experiencing.

So, if you must stoop so low as to call someone a “Karen”, I challenge you to write Senator Sorensen at her parliamentary address and pour forth your concerns.

I have known Senator Sorensen for many years. Should you find the courage to write to her, I feel comfortable advising you to buckle up and bring your best game. This Karen is no pushover you can bully online.
