There was a watermain break in Calgary last week, affecting three southwest communities. The repairs were a top priority.

Afterwards, the city issued a cautionary boil water advisory, which was lifted within 72 hours for all affected communities.

This inconvenience resulted in many choosing to buy bottled water, a situation that occurs in many Indigenous communities across the country on a daily basis.

There was, of course, no mention nor, I’m sure no thought, of this cruel reality.

Some progress has been made since 2015, but for many, still, the progress is glacial. Some of these problems are more complex than just fixing a watermain break.

But surely, imagine what it would be like when you left your own neighbourhood and your child asked you if it was safe to drink the water there because that is all they were used to.
