Mayor Casey and Councillors,

This is regarding the recent decison of town council to allot $50,000 to capture feral rabbits in Canmore and ship them to be used as food at facilities such as wildlife rehab centres.

This plan is not only cruel and ruthless, but also a black mark on Canmore’s image. In a recent Calgary Sun article, Mayor Casey is quoted saying “We’re hoping to see an end-user for the rabbits – animal rehabilitation centres looking for food supplies”.

A more humane solution would be to partner with rescue groups who would house and find adoptable homes for the rabbits. The recent feral rabbit rescues at UVIC and Kelowna are examples of a humane solution. If they can do it, we can do it in Canmore too.

These rabbits deserve the same compassion shown to cats and dogs. This is a “human problem” of irresponsible pet ownership The rabbits are innocent victims The town should take this opportunity to educate people about responsible pet ownership.

Rabbits, like dogs and cats, are not disposable pets. The decision to have a pet is a serious, long-term commitment.

How can we call ourselves a caring and humane community if we allow this to happen? If you care about the humane treatment of Canmore’s rabbits, now is the time to let the town know you do not condone their cruel plan.
