At 8 a.m. last Saturday (May 19) I had just finished walking my dogs at the off-leash park near Quarry Lake, so I decided to walk downtown to pick up a weekend paper. I dropped off my bearspray at home, picked up some money and headed into town with the dogs (on leash). Just as I was at the town end of the pedestrian bridge over the Bow River, a good-sized, glossy black bear appeared from my left chasing a rabbit along River Road. The bear hesitated briefly until a couple of cars on Bridge Road came to a quick halt, then it proceeded to cross the road before veering down to Eighth Avenue, all the while chasing after its breakfast.

I’ve enjoyed telling my bear story since, but on a more serious note it was a prime example of how our Canmore rabbits continue to attract wildlife into residential areas. In addition, it showed me that there is nothing foolish about bringing your bearspray with you when you plan to walk into or around town.

Nel Keith,
