It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of John Petroff. John was the devoted husband of Anne, beloved father of Laura (Jonathan) Silva, grandsons Sion and Jaxon, and of Jaimee (Keoni) Sarsona and granddaughter Jayla, all of Maui. John is also survived by his sister, Louise, and her family.
John was much loved in the Bow Valley. He was a very successful physical education teacher in Banff, as well as an excellent rugby and football coach. He was born on May 13, 1952 and suddenly passed away while riding his mountain bike at the Canmore Nordic Centre on October 1, 2023.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the good Samaritan who first came upon John, the many first responders, the folks at Mountain Safety who provided further onsite assistance, Dr. McLaughlin, and the nursing staff at the Canmore Hospital. Anne Petroff will be taking John’s ashes to Maui for a private service with his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren.
John will be sorely missed by his immediate family and all the friends who joined him in playing golf, riding their mountain or road bike, X-country skiing, or playing hockey. His never-ending commentary on the athletic performances of his friends always provided friendly encouragement. John’s sudden passing was a huge loss to a very large community.
