Carmen Joy Haase

1967-2023

It is with deep sadness that the Haase-Gasser family announce the passing of Carmen Joy Haase on January 24th, 2023.

Carmen was born July 4th 1967 in Barrie Ont. She attended schools in Barrie, Orillia and Oakville Ontario, Lagos Nigeria and Accra Ghana. Her many years as a “Tot Lot” leader and supervisor inspired her to pursue studies in Education. She graduated in 1990 with an honors Bachelor's Degree in the Arts and Science program for McMaster University.

In the spring of 1990, Carmen came out West to hike the West Coast Trail with some friends and to work at Lake O’Hara for the Summer, Fall and then Winter, that’s where Carmen met Charly Gasser. She worked a Summer in Golden, BC. before returning back to Ontario to further her studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Education with an additional qualification in Outdoor and Experiential Education from Queens University. She went on to Kathmandu, Nepal to volunteer-teach at a school for six months.

Over the next two years Carmen worked as a supply teacher in Ontario. During the summer she worked for Friends of Banff National Park. In January of 1996 she accepted a management position at Lake O’Hara and reunited with Charly. After a four year long distance relationship, they married in May 1997. With a shared love for the outdoors, Carmen and Charly settled in Canmore. She worked as a childcare provider, a weekend supervisor for the Bow Valley Parent link Center and more recently for the past 14 years, a teacher at the Canmore Preschool. Carmen was often seen on the trails with a happy smile. She was always thoughtful, engaging, kind, humble and selfless. Carmen was a patient mom who shared a zest for life, a passion for the outdoors and encouraged and supported the many interests and endeavors of her children.

Carmen is survived by her husband Charly, children Emma, Anika and Matthias, mother Mable and brother Trent (Danusia), nephew Konrad and nieces Kamila, Stephania and Elissa, several aunts, uncles and cousins and Rumi the beloved dog. She is predeceased by her sister Melanie (1966), father Lloyd (2012) and her grandparents.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Seniors Center in Canmore on Sunday, February 5th at 1:30PM. with doors opening at 1:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley or a charity of your choice.
