Monthly Canmore Art Guild show gets extra flare with more artists

“When you are doing art, it is solitary, but it is also communication. As soon as someone sees a painting, it is a conversation when they are looking at it.”

CANMORE – Spring is here and artists are getting out to capture the landscapes of the Bow Valley on canvas, film and other mediums.

John Prom will be the featured artist this month at the gallery, with his artwork of the beautiful landscapes found in the area.

“He is great,” said Barb Maki, membership director. “He is a new member and he has started being a full-time professional artist. He has a lot of great work.”

His work primarily focuses on the mountain scenes of the Bow Valley, which he has come to know very well.

“He knows each crack and crevice in each mountain,” Maki said.

Several other artists will also be part of the show, including Terri Heinrichs.worj

“She is also new and has been an artist professionally for 20 years,” Maki said. “She has some amazing stuff in there as well. It is nice to have some new people coming in.”

Each month, the gallery has a featured artist, but there is talk of returning to a theme for each month like the gallery had prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The gallery and guild also provide many artists in the area with their first crack at reaching a wider audience with their work.

“It is to stimulate creativity in the valley and help emerging artists showcase their work,” Maki said. “Annually, we have 15,000 visitors to the gallery.”

The guild also provides artists the chance to communicate directly with visitors through their artwork.

“When you are doing art, it is solitary, but it is also communication,” Maki said. “As soon as someone sees a painting, it is a conversation when they are looking at it.”

As for how you can help the art guild, Maki says even just coming by helps out.

“People can join the art guild, they can donate to the art guild,” Maki said. “They can buy from the art guild. They can just come in and enjoy it.”

The May show at the Canmore Art Guild will be running at Elevation Place until May 28, every Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
