Local artists gear up for Elk Run outdoor market

“Events like this are so important for us local artists. It’s the best way to keep the public interested in our work because we can share our passion with them in person.”

CANMORE – The Artists of Elk Run are opening their studio doors and headed outside to showcase their creative flair.

The Canmore collective will be hosting a pop-up market every other Saturday including this weekend Aug. 1.

“Our intention behind this event is to help bring more traffic to this creative edge of town, as well as remind people about the importance of supporting local businesses at this time,” said sculptor Peig Abbott.

Every year in December the collective hosts a studio tour, which invites guests to the industrial area to watch demonstrations, meet artists and shop for original artwork.

With the onset of COVID-19, the collective was interested in showcasing its work while drumming up business and the idea of the pop-up market was conceived.

“With summer going the way it is, we thought it would be a great opportunity to organize something outside so it’s safer for people to come and experience our work,” said potter Katie Borrowman with Of Cabbages and Kings.

She added the tours in December can be busy, and with limited space in some of the studios, holding an outdoor market is a great alternative.

“We are grateful to be allowed to set up our tents in front of some of these businesses, where we can spread out and remain safe,” Borrowman said.

From painting, to ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, photography and glass art, Borrowman said there is something for everyone to enjoy at the pop-up market.

Painter Dawn Saunders Dahl is excited for the market as it is a way to connect with those looking to support local artists.

“Events like this are so important for us local artists. It’s the best way to keep the public interested in our work because we can share our passion with them in person,” said Saunders Dahl.

The pop-up market will take place in the Elk Run Industrial area at 105 Bow Meadows Crescent, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit artistsofelkrun.com for more information.
