Banff's Music @ The Juniper returns with anniversary shows

Heather Jean Jordan, Caitlin Connelly and the Jeremy Gignoux Acoustic Ensemble set to take the stage

BANFF – Music @ The Juniper returns for its spring series at the Banff hotel and restaurant on the toe of Mount Norquay.

Just in time to pop the bubbly on its anniversary, Peaks + Prairies Productions and the Juniper Hotel’s intimate concert series celebrates two years with a pair of shows starting Thursday (March 28) when Banff locals, Heather Jean Jordan and Caitlin Connelly, bring their unique brand of folk to the stage.

The second show is April 11 when the instrumental, folk and jazz trio from the Jeremy Gignoux Acoustic Ensemble brings a little bit of everything to the Kiguli Ballroom.

Locked into a personal atmosphere to share his art, Gignoux said the ensemble is going to take the audience on a “musical journey.”

“I really like intimate crowds, I feel like there’s such an interesting connection,” said Gignoux.

“We get into a deeper place when we play and I really enjoyed it … usually intimate crowds are special for that.”

A Calgary-based performer, Gignoux (violin, fiddle) is performing with Wayne Garrett (acoustic guitar) and Keith Rodger (upright bass, banjo) in the mountain town.

A stickler for shaking things up on stage, it’s not uncommon for one of Gignoux’s shows to go in different directions.

“I love surprising people,” said Gignoux. “I love hearing the reactions when something doesn’t go the way they might have anticipated.

“There’s going to be some humoristic songs and there’s gonna be some tragic songs. A lot of concerts end differently than the way they started.”

The upcoming Music @ Juniper series will be two years since its inaugural concert, which has had 11 performances since its inception.

“We are tremendously grateful for the immense and ongoing community support of 11 captivating performances, delivered by 17 talented and engaging artists over these past two years,” said Lev Nesterov, artistic director of Music @ The Juniper. “I am excited to continue, what I hope will become, a tradition of bringing world-class talent to the Bow Valley.”

Each show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Juniper Hotel and Bistro. Tickets start at $25.
