Alaska comes to Canmore Art Guild

“We have quite a lot of birds in the show. It is bound to happen. We live in a natural, beautiful spot and the wildlife thing keeps cropping up.”

CANMORE – For its January exhibit, visitors to the Canmore Art Guild can enjoy a little bit of Alaska thanks to the artwork of featured artist Claudia Schellenberg.

“She is a long-time member of the Canmore Art Guild so she will be showing a variety of work,” said Art Guild member Heather Wood. “The show is mostly scenes from the Yukon, Alaska and the Northwest Territories.”

Schellenberg’s paintings are from a trip she made to Alaska, and they showcase her love for plants, landscapes and wildlife of that state. Her paintings are done in acrylics, watercolours and oils.

There will be several other artists exhibited this month as well, with a lot of bird artwork on display, including work by Barb Mackie and Andrew Macdonald. The abundance of bird artwork was completely by chance.

“We have quite a lot of birds in the show,” Wood said. “It is bound to happen. We live in a natural, beautiful spot and the wildlife thing keeps cropping up.”

The exhibit runs from Jan. 7-29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to Sunday.

The past year was a successful one for the art guild, capped off by a fundraiser in December.

“We had a really successful fundraiser this past Christmas and we raised money to give a scholarship to a student every year,” Wood said.

Looking ahead to 2023, the guild hopes to continue with its mandate to bring art to the attention of the people who live in the Bow Valley, and assist anyone who wants to pursue art as a hobby or career.

“We are always looking for new members,” Wood said. “It is a fabulous space to exhibit in and being part of the guild you learn from one another. Promoting art in the region is a strong part of what we do and showing what each of the members are up to.”
