Cross-country skier Devon Kershaw made history, posting the highest-ever finish for a Canadian during Europe’s Tour de Ski, finishing fourth.
“It’s bittersweet to be fourth. In the coming days, I will appreciate it more,” Kershaw said. Alex Harvey finished 12th and Ivan Babikov finished 27th.
Banff Hockey Academy’s Mitch Humphries was selected to represent Australia at the Men’s Division II B U20 World Championship.
Biathletes Aidan Miller, Stuart Harden, Sarah Beaudry and Danielle Vrielink were all chosen to represent Canada for the Youth Olympics.
Perianne Jones and Chandra Crawford join forces to win bronze in the World Cup team sprint in Milan, Italy. The medal is the first of Jones’ career.
Fighting to escape the league basement, the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles dealt Riley Reinbolt and Zack Rassell. In return, Canmore received Wyat Haustein, Paul Lamoureaux and Hayden Dawes.
Kershaw was at it again later in the month in Estonia, winning a bronze medal in the 15-kilometre classic skate. On what is considered the hardest course on the World Cup circuit, he finished with a time of 40:37.6.
“I went out really hard today. I went for the win and I don’t regret it,” Kershaw said.
Kevin Sandau grabbed top spot in the Western Canadian Championships at the Canmore Nordic Centre, winning the mini-tour and a ticket to the World Cup. Graham Nishikawa was second, while Brent McMurtry was third. Alysson Marshall was the fastest woman after a battle with Emily Nishikawa.
Thirty-year-old Jan Hudec made his debut at legendary Kitzbuehl, finishing 10th.

Ski cross racer Tristan Tafel made his X Games debut, making it through to the quarter-final and finishing second in the small final behind teammate Brady Leman.
“It was a new personal best at the international level. That was huge for me,” Tafel said.
Para-Nordic athlete Chris Klebl won silver in a cross-country sitski race in Minnesota.
Devon Kershaw and Jan Hudec both struck gold on the same weekend. Kershaw became the first Canadian to win gold in a distance race since 1988, as he won the 15-km cross-country skate ski in Rybnski, Russia.
“For the first time in my career, with 400 metres to go, I knew I was going to win. I got to the top of the last climb in third and looked around and said ‘I’m going to take this one,” Kershaw said.
Meanwhile, Hudec reached the top of the podium for the first time since 2007, winning the alpine downhill in Chamonix, France.
“I never stopped believing I could be back. I obviously had no idea how long it would take or when it would happen. I could just kind of smell it. To be on the podium after all these years and all these injuries is amazing,” Hudec said.
Nathan Smith wins three gold medals in the first IBU Cup race in North American history. “I’ve trained here my whole life, so it’s pretty special,” he said.

Relying on his patented ‘panda’s touch,’ Jan Hudec made the podium again at Crans Montana, Switzerland, winning silver in the super-G.
“It was incredible being on the podium with Didier Cuche and Benjamin Raich, two icons of skiing. Even though we’re not quite in the same league yet, it felt strangely familiar or comfortable being there with those two as I’ve know them both for such a long time,” Hudec said.
Tristan Tafel continued a rookie season hot streak by winning his first World Cup ski cross gold medal with a breakthrough performance in Goetschen, Germany.
“I’m still in shock, to be honest. I still don’t think it actually happened,” Tafel said.

The Bow Valley Wolverines won their first playoff game in two years, upsetting Olds 19-18. The Wolverines were down 18-6 after the first half, but posted a huge comeback.
Chandra Crawford and Devon Kershaw were the fastest Canadians in the Winsport Frozen Thunder Classic at the Canmore Nordic Centre.
Figure Skater Jane Gray claimed the Alberta sectionals competition championship for her first win at the senior level.
Alpine racer Jan Hudec sponsored two athletes for the season, thanking the thousands of people who have supported him in his career.
Aksel Svindel became only the fourth man to win on consecutive days at the Lake Louise World Cup, winning the downhill and super G. Hudec was 18th in the super G and Erik Guay was 11th.

Lindsey Vonn continues her ridiculous string of victories at Lake Louise, winning her seventh-straight race at Lake Louise. Vonn took all three races and said the results help prove she should race against the men at the venue.
In the final cross-country ski tune up before the Alberta World Cup, four swiss sprinters dominated the field, followed by Phil Widmer and Jess Cockney. Graeme Killick and Brittany Webster were the top Canadians in the distance races.
