Valley athletes claim 32 Winter Games medals

Bow Valley athletes cleaned up at the Alberta Winter Games, last weekend, winning a grand total of 32 medals over three days. Cross-country skiing, biathlon and speed skating proved to be the most fruitful medal haul for the athletes in Spruce Grove.

Cross-country skiing, biathlon and speed skating proved to be the most fruitful medal haul for the athletes in Spruce Grove.

Local coaches heaped tons of praise upon their athletes. The Canmore/Banff Speed Skating club sent a record number of athletes to the games, while cross-country skiers brought home the most medals, followed by biathletes.

“It was a super good weekend for them. They’re a dedicated young bunch, continuing to improve each race,” said biathlon coach Roddy Ward.

Medal winners include:

Alpine: Madelaine Mills (Banff), gold in female dual slalom and Scott Locke (Banff) and Callum Hawker (Canmore) silver in male dual slalom.

Gymnastics: Tess Engel (Canmore) gold in Level 3 bars and beam.

Figure skating: Terynn Jensen (Canmore), bronze medal.

Biathlon: Anna Sellers (Canmore), gold in 12 and under individual biathlon; Nicola Davies (Canmore), gold in 16 and under individual and sprint biathlon; Mitchell Fennel (Canmore), gold in 16 and under sprint; Anna Sellers, bronze in 12 and under sprint; Katrine Gillett (Canmore), bronze in the 14 and under sprint and individual race and Matthew Strum (Canmore), bronze in the 16 and under individual and mass start.

Cross-country skiing: Megan Orvig (Harvie Heights), gold in the 11-12 Mini Midget Female Classic, sprint and mixed relay; Molly-Jane Strum (Canmore), gold in the 13-14 midget female classic, sprint and female relay; Peter Hicks (Canmore), gold in the 15-16 male relay, silver in the classic; Morgan Rogers (Canmore), gold in the 15-16 female relay; Stefan Martin (Canmore), gold in the 15-16 male relay, bronze in the classic; Lauren Turcot (Canmore), gold in the 15-16 female relay, bronze in the sprint; Ben Thompson (Canmore), gold in the 15-16 male relay, Devin Manktelow (Canmore), gold in the 11-12 sprint and mixed relay; Thomas Manktelow (Canmore), gold in the 13-14 sprint and male relay; Anna Parent (Canmore), gold in the 11-12 mixed relay, bronze in the sprint; Kennedy Howatt (Canmore), gold in the 13-14 female relay, bronze in the classic; Emmy Phillips (Canmore) gold in the 15-16 female relay; Reed Godfrey (Canmore), gold in the 13-14 male relay, bronze in the classic; Ty Godfrey (Canmore), gold in the 13-14 classic and male relay, bronze in the sprint; Jessica Kuzick (Canmore), silver in the 13-14 midget relay and Eric Fabbri (Canmore), silver in the 11-12 mixed relay.

Speed skating: Cassidy Peterson (Canmore), gold in the 11-12 individual T2T1; Chloe Howe (Canmore) gold in the 15-17 individual race, silver in the junior relay; Stephanie Lareau (Field) gold in the 15-17 female individual, silver in the junior relay; Sam Hendry (Canmore) bronze in the 11-12 male individual T2T1.
