It will be the first time Canmore hosts a Curling Canada championship and the Rocky Mountain club is up for the challenge.
“The Canmore Golf and Curling Club was very excited to get the news from Curling Canada that we will be hosting the 2021 Canadian Mixed Championship,” said Darren Cooke, General Manager of CGCC, in a press release.
“We’ve been looking forward to welcoming a national curling championship to Canmore, and we’ll be hard at work over the next 12 months to make it an outstanding event that will send all players home with incredible memories.”
The Canadian Mixed Championship showcases 14 teams of two men and two women and since its debut in 1964, Alberta has won 11 times – the most of any province or territory. It will also be the first time Alberta will host since 2008 in Calgary.
“The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship is always a popular event that attracts many of our country’s top curlers, and we’re excited to see it back in Alberta,” said Jill Richard, Executive Director of Curling Alberta, in a press release.
“I know Alberta has a solid track record of success at the Canadian Mixed and I’m hoping home-ice advantage will pay off in Canmore.”
It won't be the first major mixed curling event to take stage in the Bow Valley area. Last year, the inaugural Qualico Mixed Doubles Classic took over the ice at CGCC and Banff Fenlands arena for a 32-team, four-day tournament with the winners walking away with a $10,000 grand prize.
The second annual Qualico Mixed Doubles Classic is set to take place this weekend (Jan. 2-5) in Banff and Canmore.
