CANMORE – The Canmore Eagles’ season has been written off after a loss in the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The Eagles were knocked out of the playoffs in a 3-1 loss in Game 7 of their semifinals series against the Whitecourt Wolverines Tuesday (April 9) after the Wolverines scored three consecutive power play goals.

Canmore rookie Zach Coutu started the scoring in the away game with an unassisted goal in the first period. The Eagles only had 5 shots on net in the first, while Whitecourt had 15.

The Wolverines took the reins in the second period with two power play goals and added an insurance goal when Travis Verbeek got his second goal of the game in the third.

Canmore’s netminder Matthew Malin stopped 29 shots, while the Eagles had 35 shots on Whitecourt’s Nicholas Avakyan.

Canmore went 0-for-2 on the powerplay, and Whitecourt’s special teams took advantage and went 3-for-3.

The Wolverines will go on to play the Calgary Canucks in the finals. The Calgarians earned their spot in the finals by beating Drumheller Dragons 4-1 in the semifinals after they won 4-2 against the Grande Prairie Storm in the quarterfinals.
