In the end, life matters

Watching the events of these past few days has driven one thing home to me, which is that no matter what we may think or believe, the truth is we are just passing through this mighty landscape, just like every other creature in it.

There is simply nothing permanent about anything we do here. All our laws, claims, titles of ownership, lines on maps and puny constructions, and all our hubris and even our wildest dreams and greatest ambitions are of no lasting consequence beyond this brief segment of time. We may matter a great deal to each other, but we matter not one scrap to the landscape itself. It’s nothing personal though, how could it be?

We have witnessed an awesome and truly powerful event that even itself is minor in comparison to the forces and the timeline of the land that surrounds us. We are just passengers on a crazy ride through time and space and we take our human affairs way too seriously.

I’m very glad that everyone is alive and kicking. It’s really all that truly matters and even that matters only to us. It could so easily have been otherwise though.

Chris Conway,

Canmore
