VIDEO: RCMP vehicle struck during traffic stop in Southern Alberta

Pick-up truck hits unmarked RCMP cruiser on Highway 2 south of Calgary

A police cruiser took a hit from a passing vehicle during a traffic stop south of High River.

The incident occurred on April 29 at a traffic stop in the southbound lanes on Highway 2 near Highway 540, where an unmarked police cruiser was struck by a passing Ford F-350.

There were no injuries reported, though the officer was inside the vehicle.

"This officer is very lucky," said Alberta RCMP Traffic Sgt. Darrin Turnbull in a media release. "This was inches away from being a terrible tragedy. Drivers need to pay attention while they are driving and follow the law when passing any stopped roadside vehicle with lights activated.”

According to the media release and video footage, visibility and weather conditions were excellent. The driver of the Ford F-350 stated that he did not see the vehicle or flashing emergency lights.

"RCMP are reminding drivers that when driving in the closest lane to any stopped roadside vehicle with flashing lights activated, such as police, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks and maintenance trucks, including those in construction zones, you must move over to the far lane to give workers extra space," reads the media release.
