BANFF – Police are on the scene of a fatal accident near Banff involving a pedestrian who was struck by a semi-trailer.

Cpl. Gina Slaney, a public information officer with RCMP Southern Alberta District, confirmed that police are on scene of an accident on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Banff Avenue exit where an accident occurred just before 5:30 p.m.

“I can confirm it involves a pedestrian and semi,” she said, adding the accident has resulted in a fatality.

The RCMP collision reconstructionist is attending the scene.

Alberta 511 has posted that the westbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway is currently closed due to a multi-vehicle collision near the Banff Avenue entrance.

A local road detour is in place and travellers should expect delays.

"Traffic is being diverted around the collision scene by the off and on ramp," said Slaney.

"It is advised that motorists choose an alternate route if possible."

The Outlook will update the story as more details become available.
