Alberta officer injured after police say stolen vehicle veered into its path

RED DEER, Alta. — A peace officer in central Alberta was seriously injured when an SUV allegedly veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the officer's vehicle.

RCMP say a Jeep Cherokee was driving along a street in Red Deer at around noon on Saturday when it crashed into a marked vehicle that was being driven by a City of Red Deer peace officer.

Police say the suspect, who was the only occupant of the Jeep, fled on foot.

Firefighters extracted the peace officer from her vehicle and police say she was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police allege the Jeep turned out to be stolen.

Police were still looking for the man, who was described as six feet tall with a short Mohawk-style haircut, late Saturday afternoon.
