A new tourist accommodation received high praise from the Canmore Planning Commission as it provides well above the requirements of the green building regulations.

“This district was previously full, but this recently became available this year as there was a bed and breakfast permit that was revoked due to compliance issues,” said Emma Sanborn, Banff's development planner.

“It is really designed for a smaller operator that’s going through a change of use process and does not have the means to construct a single additional bedroom,” said Darren Enns, director of planning and development.

A 46-unit visitor accommodation will soon be added to the Bow Valley Trail.

“This is a high-level approval. The next stage is the conceptual scheme and the next stage is development permit. At each stage we refine the information.”

“We’ll always be looking to see if there's land available within the community, including what lands we may own or not own at the moment or what lands may be feasible for future developments that provide the purposes of the vital Homes program. … Hopefully over time, we can work with the development community to provide homes through their developments that meet the needs of our programming.”

A trio of organizations were given limited intervenor status in the ongoing hearings between the Town of Canmore and Three Sisters Mountain Village Properties Limited, a provincial tribunal ruled.

“We were elated, but we hope what will happen going forward is they’ll bring forward a development to one similar to across the street. … If they came back with something like that, great, where do we sign up."

Potential intervenors were able to make their cases for speaking in the Land and Property Rights Tribunal hearing between Three Sisters Mountain Village Properties Limited and the Town of Canmore.

“I’m definitely in favour of approving this subdivision. It’s going to bring great benefit to the community, so the Gateway district has always been envisioned as a mixed commercial use and with the discussions and proposals in place, it’s clear to me the Gateway will bring a benefit to the community that we need and want.”
