Thank You, Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation.

When my family first moved to Banff in 2011, I discovered that a local business was quietly subsidizing Mt. Norquay Ski Resort ski passes for local students. This generosity made skiing – a cornerstone of our outdoor community – accessible to more kids. I was deeply moved by this act of giving even though I was unsure where it came from.

Today, the generosity of Wim Pauw, his family, and the Banff Lodging Company is front and centre. Through the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation, their contributions to the Bow Valley continue to transform our community. Their most recent $30 million gift is nothing short of extraordinary.

As someone working in the social purpose sector, I see firsthand the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation’s impact – supporting capacity-building for charities, ensuring kids get outside and active, building affordable housing, enhancing recreation opportunities, and strengthening our nonprofit sector. Projects like the Nancy Pauw Bridge and partnerships with SAIT and the YWCA Banff are reshaping our community for the better.

Gifts like this don’t happen every day. They are the result of years of collaboration, trust, and shared vision. Congratulations to all involved in bringing this remarkable project to life.

We are incredibly fortunate to have such a shining example of community philanthropy in the Bow Valley. But let’s not take it for granted. Philanthropy is not a given. Successful people and businesses don’t have to give back. Yet, when they do, it enriches our community – making it a more vibrant, supportive, and inspiring place to live.

Giving isn’t just about the size of the donation. Whether it’s $3 or a figure with many zeros, every contribution matters. Our community needs all of us – giving our time, talents, and resources to create the kind of place we’re proud to call home.

So, during this season of giving, let’s follow the example set by the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation. Give what you can. Do what you can. And when you see someone giving, say thank you. Gratitude, kindness, and generosity are what make a community strong.

Kathy Arney,
