Editor:
A letter in the Sept. 12 edition of the Outlook “Cyclists should dismount when crossing at pedestrian crosswalks” describes the practice of cycling through crosswalks to be "illegal and dangerous". It is neither.
People on bikes may ride or walk across crosswalks in Alberta. In Canmore, we even have bike crossings with signals – cyclists may ride those as well.
Drivers of vehicles are not obligated to stop for a person who has not dismounted their bike. But as a driver, I want to look out for vulnerable road users, whether they're on a bike, on foot, a skateboard or a wheelchair. I stop for them and so should all drivers.
I recommend that the letter writer follow a little less closely, in case the driver in front stops to let someone cross. Or better yet, ride a bike, it may be the fastest way to get where you're going.
