LETTER: Concerned with ministry changes

Editor:

Recent changes to the former Ministry of Environment and Parks are concerning for the future of Alberta’s protected areas. More than 90 per cent of the land base of provincial and wildland provincial parks, along with the Willmore Wilderness Area, are now under the purview of the new Ministry of Forestry, Parks and Tourism – a ministry that includes two industries the government positions for significant economic growth.

Additionally, recent comments from Premier Danielle Smith indicate a bias towards industry, ATV trails, and increased human use over protection. This is the wrong direction for landscapes that should be prioritized for their environmental and conservation values in balance with responsible recreation and enjoyment of Alberta’s natural places.
