COMMENTARY: Province needs to strengthen and support the healthcare system

A final list of Bearspaw nominations will be announced Friday (Nov. 11) and band members will cast their vote Nov. 25 – earlier than in previous years. Goodstoney band members can put their names forward to run for chief and council by Nov. 22 and can cast their vote Dec. 9.

Nestled away from in the backcountry though, you will find several mountains that highlight and celebrate the First World War history of Canada and the British Empire. Among those mountains, are a series of peaks that honour the ships of the Battle of Jutland.

The act of remembrance can be a precarious one. It’s not a regimented guideline, but one that can be unique to each individual as everyone experiences and remembers the past through their own lens.

Second World War soldier Joe Poucette stood 5’3”, but to the Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda First Nation he is remembered as a warrior who was larger than life.

“All those folks during the First World War, Second World War and Korea, and even the later conflicts like Bosnia and Afghanistan, we forget about our soldiers, some of whom made the supreme sacrifice.”
