A new bus connecting Morley and Cochrane will take its first ride March 24.

“We’re excited to be launching a transit service for Nation residents designed by and for our Nation," said Chief Darcy Dixon of the Bearspaw First Nation.

The low-floor, 26-seat Swift Mini Thni Transit bus will make stops at four locations: Morley, Chininki Gas Bar, Stoney Nakoda Resort and Casino and Cochrane.

“This transportation option will provide cost-effective, safe access to employment, education, business and services,” Chiniki First Nation Chief Aaron Young said.

March 24 will see fares waived for riders to mark the opening. Following that, single one-way fares are $5. Children two years old and younger ride for free.

“Swift Mini Thni Transit will enable Morley and Cochrane residents to stay connected with friends and family in each community,” said Wesley First Nation Chief Clifford Poucette.

The new mode of transportation is part of a four-month pilot project funded by the federal governments Aboriginal Entrepreneurship Program. The data gathered from this project will help evaluate future needs, a March 11 statement from Stoney Tribal reads.

Southland Transportation will operate the transit system, but the long-term plan is for Stoney Nakoda Nations to take over operations.
