Though there are many incredible places to discover, these three campgrounds in Alberta are great places to start.

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park Campground in Southern Alberta

Writing-on-Stone/Áísínai'pi Provincial Park is located on traditional Blackfoot land in southern Alberta near the American border. The area is known for its interesting landforms like hoodoos and unique archaeological discoveries believed to be 4,500 years old.

The campground is open year-round and offers 64 sites, most of which are serviced with 15/30 amp power. Water service is only available between the May long weekend and late September. All sites are situated within a short walk of the beautiful Milk River. Each site includes a picnic table and firepit. This provincial campground features front and back country hiking, canoe takeout, interpretive trails, grocery/supply store, playground, coin-op showers and sewage disposal.

When you visit Writing-on-Stone/Áísínai'pi Provincial Park, you feel as though you are transported to another time and place.

Elk Island Retreat Outside of Edmonton

Elk Island Retreat is a family-owned campground located down the road from Elk Island National Park and a quick 40-minute drive northeast of Edmonton. It is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet escape while remaining close to the city.

This private campground features 36 fully serviced RV sites as well as tenting and glamping options. Amenities at Elk Island Retreat include free Wi-Fi, clean coin-op showers and laundry facilities, nature trails, a volleyball net, a horseshoe pit and a sports field.

Guests at Elk Island Retreat can enjoy close proximity to Elk Island National Park for canoeing and hiking. A short 30-minute drive takes campers to the Ukrainian Cultural Village where they can learn about the long and rich history of the Ukrainian people in Alberta. The Fort Heritage Precinct down the road in Fort Saskatchewan offers a historical look at the area between 1874 and 1937.

Sundance Lodges in the Rocky Mountains

Sundance Lodges is a family owned and operated campground in Alberta’s beautiful Rocky Mountains. It is located in Kananaskis Country just 45 minutes from Calgary and Banff. They offer treed, un-serviced sites at this serene mountain getaway.

Amenities at Sundance Lodges include a small grocery store, free hot showers, coin laundry, firewood and propane sales as well as a gift shop.
