BANFF – Banff’s elected officials have eased the heavy hammer on commercial construction hours on Saturdays. On Tuesday (Oct. 10), council gave three readings to an amending bylaw to change construction hours on Saturdays from 10 a.m.

A peaceful protest by roughly 140 people highlighted some of the community’s dissatisfaction with the Court of Appeal upholding the Land and Property Rights Tribunal’s decisions on the Three Sisters Mountain Village Properties Limited area structure plans moving forward.

“Between those two locations, and our existing staff housing in the village of Lake Louise, we have enough to get us through the winter season."

A master plan outlining future Canmore infrastructure needs and the basis for ongoing off-site levy negotiations was accepted for planning purposes. The Utility Master Plan (UMP), which was first presented at the May committee of the whole meeting,

“I’m excited about this ASP and this is not intended to be a delay. However, we have heard some excellent comments from a variety of speakers. … The essence of this is wherever there has been some suggestions I’d like to hear from administration on it. … I’d like a written response so we can consider that as we consider the ASP in November.

“A large part of the need for an ARP stems from the uncertainty and opposition relating to perceived proximity of the upper aquifer and a potential negative impact of development to the aquifer, and thus to the groundwater supply.”

The Three Sisters Mountain Village Properties Limited Smith Creek and Three Sisters Village area structure plans will proceed, per an Alberta Court of Appeal ruling.

The Town of Canmore has appointed members of a task force charged with addressing livability in the community and making a critical dent in its housing woes.

“I hear from council that we’re supportive of making changes that will make [the bylaw] better for everybody, but I think we just want to make sure we understand why those changes are occurring and make sure we know a little bit more background information.”

“If we’re not able to come to a mutual agreement with the applicant, the CPC membership allows us to have a more robust conversation because there’s architects, there’s planners, there’s developers who are on the board and can help assist in that decision-making process,”
